Herbalism

Individually tailored herbal medicine

From Soil to Soothing

From the past, to the present, and foreseeably the future, plants have always defined treatment. With the advent of penicillin from a mold spore and aspirin from the bark of white willow, herbs are at the core of our medical context. Herbalism has been integral to medical care for millennia in indigenous communities around the world, and our use of it owes thanks to those communities' expertise. Herbalism in practice is the applied knowledge of the past into an ever evolving landscape of holistic care. With over one quarter of all medicines being sourced from plants and plant compounds, modern scientific studies corroborate folk and indigenous herbal traditions. The growing support from Western medicine for herbal care allows this field to flourish and grow more robust year by year. Using this new and wonderfully, wonderfully old information, our goal is that our apothecary grows much the same.

Our team has studied herbal medicine for six years, with the last three years supporting clinical work  covering myriad ailments. Learning native plant identification and properties of the Southern Indiana area has helped bolster the efficacy of our herbal products. As many of our ingredients are foraged from local plant populations, keeping the tenants of ethical harvest at the core of our work.

Our team does not discredit Western medicine but with personal, childhood experience of the opioid epidemic, we know well the havoc that ensues when a life is lived out of balance and we stray too far from natural compounds in both singularity and dosage. It is for this reason, our practice is specialized to non-addictive pain management. When nature provides safe alternatives, they should be a present option more so than potentially lethal and addictive substances.

In 2021, we established ourselves as an Herbalist in Bloomington, IN, offering personalized tinctures, teas, and balms. With over 200 locally sourced and foraged herbs, it hass been our pleasure to serve this community then, now, and into the future.

Squid at Ars Enodia is an exceptionally well studied, meticulous, and thoughtful herbalist. In the more than a year since I have used their products, they have helped remedy a multitude of ailments. I have chronic health problems that manifest with lots of inflammation and joint pain in my body. The teas, tinctures, and balms I’ve used from Squid have dramatically reduced the amount of pain I experience and done leagues for keeping inflammation at bay.

This year I also managed to contract Infectious Mononucleosis and was saddled with debilitating exhaustion for months. When I finally got the diagnosis and was told by the doctors there was nothing that could be done for my symptoms, I reached out to Squid. They formulated a specially crafted tea blend that included herbs found effective in studies against the Epstein-Barr virus that causes most mono cases. My exhaustion was abated within a week.

I cannot say enough good things about the time, resources, and effort Squid puts into their craft. They diligently walk through your health history and any medications you take to make sure there are no drug interactions, cover in detail the science behind what herbs they are using, and even go so far as to explain what forms of the plant work best for what remedies. Squid’s herbalism isn’t just cheeky bulk blends with names like, “Sleepy Time Tea” or “Immune Booster”, it’s individually curated medicinal herbs condensed into a medium most effective for the treatment of your health concern. I highly recommend their work.
