About Us

Having worked in multiple neopagan spheres over the years, Squid began to notice several things:

  1. No matter how well intentioned a metaphysical shop may be, cultural appropriation was constantly bleeding in from the edges.

  2. The majority of witchcraft education was rooted in Wiccan practices.

  3. Magical workings in harmony and community with the natural environment were surface-level at best.

  4. Misinterpretations and misinformation were still leading conversations among practitioners.

  5. People wanted better.

So, Ars Enodia was born from absence: an absence of ancient magical systems, traditional witchcraft, and environmental consciousness in pagan communities. It was also born from presence: a presence of cultural appropriation, misinformation, and arrogance, unintentional on its best day and insidious on its worst.

The space we seek to create with Ars Enodia is one of empathetic, critical dialogue, collaborative community work, accountability, and humility. You will not see products in our shop that use white sage, palo santo, or abalone, we will never make dream catchers or voodoo dolls, and when we are using methods that call on traditional ways of magic, we will pay homage to the origins and communities that developed these practices. When we fuck up, which we innevitably will, you will see us take ownership of those mistakes and do better.

Witchcraft is open and welcome to everyone, and ensuring that our practices are rooted in community as opposed to commodity is crucial for maintaining compassionate relationships with spirit, land, and people.

Squid (They/Them)

Squid is a practicing witch who took initial interest within the Ugaritic and Goetic systems of magic in 2016. They have since branched out into a more formalized worship of Hekate and are a scholar of Greek magical systems.

Their passion for old sources, tomes, and anything averaging a couple hundred years old has made them a resource on forgotten systems of magic. Their favorite part of witchcraft is discovering these bygone practices and bringing them back into activation, reviving veneration for slumbering gods.

While their love of magic is profound, the soul of their work is herbalism. Having been a working clinical herbalist for three years with a specialty in herbal pain management, they find joy in providing an alternative answer to life's physical ailments. You will often find them in the woods studying local flora and striving to understand native plant medicine.

Versed in a variety of divinatory and psychic methodologies, Squid has established themselves as a consultant in their community for spiritual guidance, hauntings alleviation, ritual practice, and magical mentorship. Their work has engendered the support of a dedicated client base, to which they are eternally grateful.

Shelbie (She/They)

Shelbie is a witch whose practice is rooted in Celtic and Hellenistic magic systems, with a keen focus on uplifting sacred narrative across the expanse of time and space.

Having a background in museums, parks, and world cultures, they consider themself to have a modest knowledge of many magical systems, and enough consideration for the dangers of hubris to never claim expertise in any.

She is an expounder of kitchen magic and its occupation in modern witchcraft as a pseudo-forge, an adept practitioner of glamour, heavily studied in the fey, yokai, and other magical creatures, and a dedicated user of knot work/weaving in spellcraft.

Shelbie’s path is shaped by her devotion to the goddesses Brigid, Athena, and Persephone, to whom she owes her successes and woes (particularly when she’s behind on fresh offerings).
